Tradition holds that Lord Hanuman guards Ayodhya from this hilltop, so pilgrims customarily seek his blessings here before Ram darshan. The temple stands within a fort-like enclosure and is reached by 76 steps; elders may find the climb tiring, so tell us in advance and we will plan the pace.
Best for: panoramic views of the town. Popular prasad: laddoo.
The beautifully ornate palace-temple dedicated to Sita-Ram, known for its golden sanctum.

Believed to be the palace gifted to Sita by Queen Kaikeyi after her marriage to Ram. The present building dates from the late 19th century and is known for its courtyard, carved pillars and the gold-crowned idols of Sita and Ram in the sanctum.
Good to know: temples usually close for a midday break, so we plan the visit around it.

The grand temple at the birthplace of Shri Ram, consecrated in January 2024. Built in the North Indian Nagara style with carved pink sandstone, it enshrines Ram Lalla, the child form of Lord Ram.
Good to know: darshan needs advance registration and photo ID. Phones, bags and electronics are usually kept in lockers outside. Expect a fair amount of walking and queues.

The Sarayu is the river that flows beside Ayodhya and is considered holy in the Ramayana tradition. At sunset, lamps, bells and chanting fill the ghat while devotees float diyas on the water. It is a calm, atmospheric end to the day.
Tip: reach a little early for a good spot, and carry a light shawl in winter.

The palace associated with King Dashrath, father of Shri Ram, also called Bada Sthan.

Also called Bada Sthan, this is believed to be the palace of King Dashrath, where Ram and his brothers spent their childhood. The complex houses temples with idols of the Ram family and is a peaceful stop away from the larger crowds.
Good to know: quiet, shaded courtyards make it a good rest break.
Temple said to mark the site of Ram's Ashwamedha Yagya, followed by a stroll along the Sarayu ghats.

Treta Ke Thakur is said to mark the place where Ram performed the Ashwamedha Yagya. The present temple was rebuilt in the 18th century with support from Queen Ahilyabai Holkar. Ram Ki Paidi is a sweep of ghats on the Sarayu, famous for the Deepotsav lamp festival at Diwali.
Tip: the ghats are lovely for photos in the morning light.

Nageshwarnath is among Ayodhya's oldest Shiva temples and is traditionally linked to Kush, Ram's son. Tulsi Smarak Bhawan honours Goswami Tulsidas, who is said to have begun the Ramcharitmanas in Ayodhya; the memorial has a small library and displays.
Good to know: Maha Shivratri sees the biggest gathering at Nageshwarnath.

- Ram Mandir darshan needs advance registration and photo ID; rules and timings can change, so we confirm a day before.
- Phones, bags and electronics are usually kept in lockers. Carry minimal items and wear easy-to-remove footwear.
- E-rickshaws are open vehicles, so carry a shawl or umbrella. Vehicles usually can't reach the temple gate, so expect a short walk.
- October to March is most comfortable. Festival days are very crowded, so book early.
